Birkat Ranch has been in the Roth family since its foundation by David Roth nearly fifty years ago. Originally intending to own a simple family farm, David's plans changed when he discovered that his newly-purchased mare was in foal, unbeknownst previously to either him or the former owner. A bit of research uncovered that the sire must have been Aamir, a local champion Egyptian Arabian stallion, and that the mare Khalilah was of similar lineage. David renamed the Roth farm to Birkat Ranch, in honour of the unexpected blessing, registered the colt as Maimonides BR, and set about the far more difficult task of convincing his wife that spontaneously becoming a niche horse breeder with limited prior experience was a wise business decision.
While it was David who laid Birkat Ranch's foundations, his son Sam truly took the establishment to the next level. Having grown up around horses, he had an instinctive eye for their quality that surpassed his father's. Following David's retirement, Sam began building up a stock of horses from competition lines, rather than just impressive pedigrees - though staying true to their foundational Egyptian bloodlines, Sam wanted to ensure versatility and vivacity in the Roths' animals. For a time, Birkat Ranch was one of the foremost breeders of Egyptian Arabians in the region.
Shortly after the ranch's 30th anniversary, diaster struck in the form of one of California's devastating wildfires. Birkat Ranch evacuated, and while all of the horses and staff were unharmed, the property itself was left largely uninhabitable. The Roths had little choice but to sell most of their horses, save for a half-dozen core specimens of their bloodlines, and temporarily board what was left of their stock while they rebuilt. The stress led to Sam's heart attack, after which his daughter Sasha took control of the ranch.
Recovery was slow and painful, but it happened through Sasha's determination and passion. Today, Birkat Ranch has been fully rebuilt and is in process of restaffing and repurchasing old stock. The ranch offers stud and broodmare services, sales, and competes in dressage, show jumping, cross-country, and flat racing, intent on proving that Arabians are more than just pretty faces.
