Indyia's nerves had been their undoing from the minute they'd arrived here. She wasn't even twenty yet and had always been the baby of the team. She was used to working with the older, more experienced horses who could save her when she got the wrong stride, or when she buckled under pressure. But over winter when Scotty had bought Orpheus, she'd fallen in love with the black sabino stallion and worked with him every morning; she was ready for a challenge, she'd promised she was up to it.
Scotty hadn't been able to talk her out of riding Otto at the show, having to just simply stand on the sidelines as his own horse was loaded up. Somehow Indyia had convinced him and Alma into sending Otto and herself to the show and now - now, young Indyia was seriously regretting all that begging and effort she put into getting here.
They'd already knocked down a pole and Otto was getting more and more stressed with each fence as Indyia's hands wavered on the reins constantly and made sharp turns that he didn't appreciate. He was a tall horse and needed a calm hand and support whilst he found his feet.
"Get a grip!" Scotty was stood at the arena side, his face scrunched up with anger beside Gregg and Alma as she cantered past and felt the guilt sink deep.
Taking a deep breath, she gave a steady squeeze on the reins and felt Otto respond instantly, shifting his weight back and steadying himself before they sailed over a blue oxer. They landed together; much smoother than their previous fences so far and Indyia felt a small spur of confidence.
"Okay, three more to go," She whispered, guiding them across the arena and squinting to find the line she'd walked three times towards the wide green and white spread.
They sailed over - and Indyia remembered exactly why she'd wanted the chance to compete.
