Somehow, Bree managed to drag Whitney and Fore out to a show, a Hunter show, God forbid. Whitney couldn't be more out of place, she was a jumper, barely, and a vet, what was she doing here? Fore, a usual 'ants in my pants' kind of guy, was unusually quiet. Somehow the 'you breathe too loud and we will snap your neck' Hunter atmosphere made him unsettling quiet.
Not many people flocked the arena, staying behind in the tents, drinking hot chocolate in morbid silence. Whitney sighed and turned to look ahead to the ears of Fore. "I'd rather do a rectal examination than be here." she thought. The buzzer rang, nearly giving Whitney a heart attack. She picked up her reins and cued Fore to pick up a canter, which he willingly did. She turned him to the right, making a courtesy circle before starting the course. She propped herself into a half seat, already feeling the burn. Fore cantered slow and steady with his head low, pulling against reins.
They popped over the first jump, a white fence, smoothly and carried on. "Nice and round. Use your corners." Whitney could hear Bree saying. She pulled the stallion in wide to the next jump.
The pair carried on effortlessly through the course. "How much longer can this course get?" Whitney thought as she looked to the next jump. "Oh wait. This is the last one, thank God." Fore's strides got longer and Whitney could tell the distance was going to be terrible. He took off long but they tried to make the awkward distance not look as bad and Fore launched himself over the jump, thoroughly clearing it, not skimming low like the other Hunter ponies.
Whitney sat back down and slowed Fore to a trot. They had made it through their first Hunter competition. She exchanged smiles with Bree and headed to the exit, where the next rider and horse were entering.
